The RISE (Remote Inquiry of Science Education) project is an ERASMUS+ initiative that focuses on the needs of science teachers in conducting experimental work remotely. The results will not only address distance learning but also other situations, such as a student’s prolonged absence due to illness or experimental homework, as the activities are based on readily available materials.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, experimental work as a learning method was largely neglected, resulting in students not receiving adequate scientific knowledge that proved to be examples of good practices. The RISE project focuses on Inquiry Based Learning (IBL), an approach where students, through their own interest, planning, and execution of experiments based on observation and data collection, draw conclusions. This makes them owners of their own learning. These students can then more easily approach problem-based learning and demonstration experiments.
The project began in March 2021 and concludes in February 2023.
Project Objectives:
a.) Promote and support science teachers in conducting remote experimental work. The goal will be achieved through meetings of teachers (PLCT – Professional Learning Communities of Teachers) by adapting existing and creating new learning units through remote research.
b.) Ensure teachers’ professional development supported through the exploration of their own practices. The objective will be achieved within PLCT meetings (Professional Learning Communities of Teachers), where teachers will be trained to conduct research on their own practices (PI – Practitioner Inquiry).
c.) Develop an e-collection of learning units based on Inquiry Based Learning (IBL), tailored for remote work. These will be developed through PLCT ( Professional Learning Communities of Teachers ) and designed in collaboration with partner organizations. Teachers will assess their effectiveness by using practitioner inquiry (PI). This also represents the first outcome of the RISE project.
d.) Design and organize a distance-learning course for teachers’ professional development to train novice teachers in IBL (Inquiry Based Learning) implementing and organizing effective PLCT (Professional Learning Communities of Teachers) in their home environment.
e.) Design and organize a distance-learning course for professional development of experienced teachers in IBL (Inquiry Based Learning), focusing on the implementation and execution of practitioner inquiry (PI – Practitioner Inquiry) to assess the effectiveness of their own methods.
